Of Berks County, Pennsylvania

Preface

This limited genealogy is the result of more than two years of work. The goal has been to establish the male lines in the first generations of the Wenrichs who settled in Berks County, of which Reading Became the county seat.

The Wenrichs in Pennsylvania were "Pennsylvania Dutchmen". The term was derived from the word "Deutsch" meaning German. The Amish were more often of Swiss descent. In his travels in Europe, Thomas Wenrick of Greenville, Ohio found the name in various countries, but the name is not very common. We know of no Wenrich Coat of Arms that existed when our ancestors left Germany.

Mathias Wenrich the First acknowledged his will with his initials, indicating illness at the time of inability to write. At least some of his children received schooling, however, since wills of three sons were signed in full. The writing ability of the Wenrichs served to keep unchanged the spelling of the name in the Berks County area. However, the first two records of our Wenrichs, in 1709, used the spelling Weinrich. Wein in German is the equivalent of Vine in English, so it is not too surprising that a portion of the homestead in Berks County was titled "Venericks". And when Wenrichs left Berks County the name was sometimes spelled Venrick.

This work will not attempt to list descendants of Benedictus Wenrich, but we offer a brief account of this intrepid man. While seeking material for "The Palatine Families of New York", Hank Jones found that Benedictus Weinrich sponsored a Bisschof baby girl at Rotterdam April 7, 1709. A note added "from the Palatinate, profess is go to Pennsylvania". (The Palatinate, also known as Pfalz, was west of the Rhine and north of France. Many so called Palatines were from other parts of the Rhine valley and some were Swiss refugees). As Benedictus had professed, he left the other Palatines at New York and went to join a second group of Palatines who were settling in the area of Strasburg in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Rupp listed him there in 1712 and said Benedictus took up land in 1715. After being taxed there as late as 1727, he moved to Craven County, North Carolina where a third group of Palatines has settled and he bought land there in 1728. Wills, as written by his descendants before 1804, were signed with X's. The name, as written by others, became Vendrick. He apparently died in 1744 without leaving a will.

Descendants of Balthaser and Benedictus Wenrich were the only Wenrichs found in the first census in 1790. There may have been other more recent Wenrich immigrates but the only ones we know of were David and Matilda Weirieich of Bavaria who came to Montgomery County, Ohio in 1870. The Wenrich-Wenrick name has been found in 86 phone books.

Certain Wenrich families have, in past years, had home comings to renew family ties. A Coat of Arms was crafted in 1923 and Wenrich Family bulletins were published annually from 1924 through 1941 and from 1955 through 1958. Committees were appointed to work on the family tree. They were unable to do a comprehensive job, but much basic information and parts of lineages appeared in the Bulletins. With the help of much information which the committees did not have, we now have a nearly complete genealogy. Unfortunately, some Wenrichs who left home could not be linked to their proper parents.

Paul N. Wenrich, now deceased, deserves special mention for his work on the committees and for the information he inserted in the Bulletins. Mrs. Elizabeth Greth Jr. of Werenersville, a former President of the Association has contributed further, and this effort would not have begun with the encouragement of Mrs. Dorothea White of Los Angeles. She did research work also.

The family sheets of Part 1 are coded in the upper left corners. Following Part 1 and introduces the great grandsons of Mathias Wenrich the First. These great grandsons head up chapters of Part 2 which, if completed, would bring the genealogy down to date. We do not plan to completed, would bring the genealogy down to date. We do not plan to complete these chapters, but interested parties may desire to work on their individual chapters. Thomas Wenrick of RR 3, Greenville Ohio 45331, was nearly completed has chapter M-3.

It will be seen that most marriages were apparently performed at the Christ Lutheran Church. It should be understood, however, that the pastor served several churches in the area and many marriages may have been performed elsewhere. The pastor's headquarters were at Christ Lutheran Church and marriage records were generally kept there.

Of 2814 Palatines who left England for New York in 1710, some died at sea and many remained at New York. Our ancestors were among those who made a final effort and moved to Pennsylvania. We may be very proud of them.

In 1709, wars, severe weather, taxes, religious differences and land hunger induced many Germans living in the Rineland to leave. Queen Anne of England invited them to London from where some were sent to New York and other colonies. An Embarkation list of some of these going to London in 1709 included Balazar Weinrich with wife, 3 sons (ages 7, 5 and 3) and daughter. Balazar was listed as a husbandman and vinedresser. See "Early Palatine Emigration" by Knittle and "Book of Names" by MacWethy for this and for New York records.

In a Colonial census of Palatines at New York in 1710 we find:

Wenerick, Baltzar, 40 Wenerich, Benedictus, 32

Wenerick, Elizabeth, 30 Wenerich, Christina, 33

Wenerick, Hans George, 9 Wenerich, Franz, 5 Wenerick, Johan Maltheis, 6 Wenerich, Johannes, 1/2 Wenerick, Maria Eliz., 17

The English had a scheme for sending Palatines to New York to collect naval stores for use by the English Navy, but the scheme failed when it was learned that the pine trees were not suitable. Besides, the Germans had their hearts set on farming and home building.

Many had died on the long sea voyage and more were to die of great deprivation after arrival. (2814 left England, 2344 arrived alive at New York). Some food was made available for a couple of years then cut off. About 1717, a Simmendinger Register" listed Balthaser Wenrig at Wormsdorff (a camp on the Hudson above New York).

Records of the Kigston, New York Dutch Church show that Juriaan Peeshaar (George Beshore) married Aug. 6, 1716 Marytgen (Mary Eliz.) Wenderig, born in the Pals (Pfalz or Palatinate). Their son Baltus, baptized July 31, 1720, was sponsored by Baltus and Magdalene Wenrig.

In 1722 the Palatines were invited to Pennsylvania where they would be given land for homes. Starting in 1723, some of the Palatine names started showing up at the Tilpehocken (land of the turtle) area in Pennsylvania. Franz and Georg Wenrich. According to a record of the Little Tulpehocken Church (one mile west of Bernville) Balthaser Wenderich and wife Maria Magdalene were baptismal sponsors in 1726 of Mathias' son John Balthaser Wenrich. In 1739 Mathias Wenrich bought land from Conrad Weiser on Spring Creek (later Furnace Creek) in what is now Heidlebert Township in Berks County. It is family tradition that at least some of our first ancestors were buried in the Northkill Churchyard north of Bernville.

The first ones to come from New York in 1723 settled along the Tulpehocken in the area of what is now Stouchsburb. Soon others came and settled further downstream and on North Kill Creek. Shown in the map is where Frranz Wenrich lived in 1729. Births and baptisms of Mathias Wenrich's children were recorded at the Little Tulpehocken Church starting in 1726. He bought land near present day Robesonia in 1739. Shown also on the map are tracts of land patented to Mathias Wenrich and his son Balthaser. George, oldest son of Adam Bonawitz, married a daughter of Mathias Wenrich II. Lands owned by Peter Leininger and Mathias Wenrich III in 1832 are shown (P.L.) and (M.W.). A forge was built on the Bonawiez tract in 1796 by George Ege.

Miscellaneous Items

Balser Wennerick was taxed in Lancaster County in 1724 and 1726. In the 1710 Colonial census, Belthaser had two sons. We know nothing further about George except that he was at Tulpehocken in 1734-1746. Maltheis was, of course, our Mathias the First.

Benedictus had Franz who lived at Tulpehocken and Reading. A second son, Johannes or John, went to North Carolina with him.

At the New Holland Lutheran Church in Lancaster County, a record shows that Balthasar Wendrich married Johanna Dorothes Weidman There the same day. We have no further information on them except that Balthzer Benzer patented land in Leacock Township in 1760.

"Annals of Swiss and German Pioneers of Pennsylvania" by Eshlemar says that a Wenrich, first name not given, was brought directly to the Pequea Colony in Lancaster County in 1711. Nothing more is known of him. An Adam Wenrich was shown of a tax list of Lebanon Twp. in 1750 but the name did not appear later and it could have been a mis-spelling of another name.

As recounted in the Bulletins, a John Wenrich, born 1775, left home as a young man and settled finally near Frederick, Maryland. Other Wenrichs of unknown parentage turned up in Ohio in the 1800's. All in all, we were fortunate in finding as many records as we did.

Franz (Francis) Wenrich (1705 - 1779) son of Benedictus.

He was living at Tulpehocken in 1729 and was sponsor on July 29, 1731 for Esther Wenderich, born July 25, 1731, daughter of Mathias Wenderich, recorded in Little Tulpehocken Church record. He owned 150 acres of land January 2, 1737 per W. F. A. Bulletin of 1938.

In 1751 Franz Wenrich and wife Elizabeth were sponsors for a child of John Zeller Jr. of Tulpehocken per record of Casper Stoeve.

In 1753 Francis Wenrich was a patentee of a lot in Reading. He was on tax lists there from 1759 through 1779. His occupation was given as "gentleman".

Francis wrote a will before he died in 1779 but his bequests were only to his wife Martha, to a church in Reading and to a church in Lebanon. He appears to have no children.

James was born in Mercedes Aberdeen Scotland. Came to America settling in Canton, Ohio; later moved to Preble County, Ohio. He was a bell maker and blacksmith by trade. The family came to Huntington County, Indiana on October 12, 1837, settling on the bank of the Salamonia River about four miles northwest of Warren, Indiana. It is said that by his trade this place was named Belleville, Indiana. He lived there only ten months and was the first white settler to die in Jefferson Township, Huntington County. His grave is in the Good Cemetary just south of State Road 218 east edge of Warren, Indiana.

Martha (Oberholt) Stuart, his wife, was born in Virginia, the daughter of David (d. 9/5/1850) and wife Elizabeth Oberholt (d. 6/13/1835).

Martha, with her parents came to Ohio about the year 1810. Tradition has it she came from Scranton, Pennsylvania to Canton, Ohio by ox team. Here she met and married James Stuart. She died of typhoid fever and palsy and is buried in the Pipe Creek Cemetary, Cass County, Indiana.

George Franklin Wenrich

1889 - 1974

Nellie Blanche Rood Wenrich

1886 - 1966

George was born 5 October, 1889, in Miami Couny, Peru, Indiana, the youngest son of Joseph Spencer Wenrich and Sarah Louisa Paul Wenrich.

George's mother, Sarah, died in 1892, when he was two years, 3 months old. His father, Joseph, had two older sons, Otto, 9 years old and Howard, 5 years old. Joseph had a butcher shop in peru and felt he was not able to raise three young sons. The two older boys, Otto and Howard, were taken to Oxford, Kansas, and were given a home with their mother's sister, Jane Paul Hahn and her husband, Joe Hahn. George was given a home with another sister of their mothers, Susan Elmira Paul Helderle and her husband, George Helderle. They had a daughter, Elizabeth "Bess", born in 1882. The Helderles also raised Paul Wibel, a son of Susan's sister, Carrie Paul Wibel, who had died in 1905. George Wenrich lived in their home until he was 18. "Bess" and Paul were the family he knew as he did not see his brother Howard for 34 years.

When George was 19, he married Nellie Rood at Wabash, Indiana. Their first son, Royal, was born in 1909, in Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1911, when daughter, Ruth, was born, George was attending seminary in Boston, Massachusetts, to become a Baptist minister. Daughter, Helen, was born in a suburb of Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1912. A daughter, Betha, was born in 1914, and a son, Harold, was born in 1915 in Eaton County, Michigan.

Not long after Harold was born in 1915, the family moved to Sublett County, Wyoming, in Big Piney, Marbleton area. These small towns were near the Green River in sparsely settled country, 80 miles east of the Idaho border and 120 miles S.E. of Jackson Hole. The reason for the family leaving Michigan to travel to this area was for him to continue in the Baptist ministery. There was not a Baptist church in that area so George worked in the oil fields to make a living for his family.

A son, George Donald, "Don" was born in 1917, in Marbleton, Wyoming. Son, Willard, was born in 1920, and died in July, 1921, and is buried in Big Piney, Wyoming Cemetery. Another son, Gale, was born 8 June, 1921, in Marbleton, Wyoming. In 1923, a daughter, Nellie Blanche, "Sis" was born in Marbleton and in 1925, another son, John Joseph, "Bud" was born in Marbleton.

In the years, 1916 through 1927, George and Nell lived in a log house in Big Piney and cared for their 9 surviving children with the older choldren helping care for the younger ones.

George continued with his ministry alogn with many other occupations. He told of hauling freight from Kemmerer, 60 miles southwest and from Lander, Wyoming, 80 miles northeast. These were the nearest railroad terminals. He hauled pipe for the oil fields and also lots of coal. Blizzards were his worst fear. He and his helper were caught in one and to survive, emptied their freight, turned the bed of their wagon upside down, and survived for 2 days.

George was a man of resourcefulness and had many talents. He had a beautiful voice and sang for funerals and other occasions. He fulled in as a barber when anyone wanter their hair cut. He assisted the mortician when needed. He also had a water well drilling business as late as 1927. He truly was a caregiver.

In 1927, George's brother, Howard and wife Edith, children, Willis and Evelyn, drove from Oxford, Kansas, to Big Piney. George and Howard had not seen each other for 34 years. The families enjoyed a reunion that gave them memories to last throughout their lives. Willis remembered the stacks of pancakes his Uncle George cooked every morning for everyone.

George and Nell's oldest son, Royal, returned to Kansas with Howard and family. In December of 1927, George and Nell and 3 children came to Oxford. A little later, George, and his brother Howard, returned to Big Piney and got Ruth, Helen, Betha, Harold and Don. Nell's mother, "Grandma Rood" who had been staying with the 5 kids came to Oxford by train. They all stayed with Howard and Edith a short time. Their son, "Bud", had surgery to correct a foot defect. The family then moved to a farm southwest of Oxford and George worked in the oil fields. Another son, Howard Benjamin, "Ben" was born 26 March, 1928, in Winfield, Kansas.

George added another vocation to his list. George and Nell put in a grocery store on the west edge of Oxford on 160 Highway. During World War II, he worked in Wichita in some capacity of the war effort.

George and Nell's home was always abounding in laughter, games and excitement at holidays. Nephew, Willis, and wife Carmen, always managed to spend some moments with all of them.

George and Nell celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1958. George died 19 February, 1974, and Nell died 6 February, 1966. Both are buried in the Oxford Cemetery.

The following children are deceased: Royal, Ruth, Betha, Donald, Willard, Gale and Bud.

In July, 1996, Harold, wife Elda, and daughters Cheryl and Debra, hosted a family reunion in Belle Plain, Kansas. Thirty-six attended; a beautiful and deserving tribute to George and Nell Wenirch
